How to calculate calories in a recipe

Calorie data is per gram. Recipes are in cups and spoons. That gap is the whole job. Here's how to close it.

    1. List every ingredient with an amount

One per line, the way you'd write the recipe. Lines like salt to taste have no amount, so they can't be counted until you add one.

    2. Turn each amount into grams

A cup of flour weighs about 125 g. A cup of sugar weighs about 200 g. Same cup, very different calories. The calculator uses USDA's measured weights for each food, and it knows a packed cup of brown sugar from a loose one.

    3. Look up each food per 100 g

We use USDA FoodData Central, the US government's food composition database. It covers thousands of raw and prepared foods.

    4. Add it up and divide by servings

Total the recipe, then divide by the number of servings you cut it into. That's your per-serving label.

The calculator does all four steps as you type. You can check each one: every line shows the food it matched and the grams it used, and you can change both.

    How accurate is it?

Good enough to plan a menu, compare two versions of a recipe, or fill in a recipe card. It isn't a lab test.

    • The data is solid. USDA values come from lab analysis. They're averages, so a specific brand can differ. If you use a branded product, type its weight in grams and pick the closest match.
    • Cooking changes weight, not much else. Baking and simmering drive off water. Calories stay in the dish. Divide the finished dish evenly and the per-serving numbers hold.
    • Oil is the big wildcard. Deep frying, draining fat off meat and discarding marinades all change what you eat. The calculator counts what goes in.
    • It shows its work. Every line shows its match and its grams. If a line has no amount or no USDA weight, we tell you instead of guessing quietly.

    Nutrition questions, answered

How do I calculate calories in a recipe?

Add up the calories in every ingredient, then divide by the number of servings. The hard part is weight. Calorie data is per gram and recipes use cups and spoons. Paste your recipe above and the calculator converts each line to grams with USDA portion weights, looks up each food and does the sums.

    Is this nutrition calculator accurate?

It gives a solid estimate. The values come from USDA FoodData Central lab data. Brands, ripeness and cooking method all move real numbers a little. For food you sell in a package, confirm with a lab or a labelling expert.

Can I add this to my Shopify recipes?

Yes. Recipe Kit's recipe cards show a nutrition panel on your Shopify store, and the app can calculate it for you.

What if an ingredient isn't matched right?

Click the food name under that line and search for the right one. If the weight looks off, type the grams yourself. Your changes stick while you keep editing the recipe.

Why are some lines not counted?

A line needs an amount to count. Salt to taste and oil for frying don't have one. Some foods also have no cup or piece weight in the USDA data. The calculator flags those lines. Type the grams and they count.

Is it free? Do you keep my recipe?

It's free. Everything runs in your browser, so your recipe never leaves the page. We only ask for an email if you want the label or recipe card downloads.
