Privacy Policy

Last Updated: November 25th, 2025

Recipe Kit ("we," "us," or "the App") provides a recipe card and blog creation service (the "Service") to merchants who use Shopify to power their stores. This Privacy Policy describes how personal information is collected, used, and shared when you install or use the App in connection with your Shopify-supported store.

1. Our Role: Processor vs. Controller

To ensure compliance with data protection laws like the GDPR and CCPA, it is important to understand our role:

  • For Merchant Data: We act as a Data Controller. This means we determine how your account information (as a store owner) is used to provide you with the Service.

  • For End-Customer Data: We act as a Data Processor (or "Service Provider"). We process data about your store's visitors only on your behalf and according to your instructions (e.g., to display recipes or track analytics). You, the Merchant, are the Data Controller for this information.

2. Information We Collect

A. Information from Merchants (You)

When you install the App, we are automatically able to access certain types of information from your Shopify account to provide the Service:

  • Store Data: Your Shopify store domain, email address, shop name, plan type, country, and timezone.

  • Shopify Permissions:

    • "Read Products": Required to attach your store's products to recipe ingredients.

    • "Read Themes": Required to identify your active theme for installation.

    • "Write Themes": Required to install Recipe Kit code snippets (Liquid files) onto your active theme.

    • "Read/Write Content": Required to create and modify blog posts to attach recipe cards.

B. Information from End-Customers (Your Shoppers)

We collect data from your store's visitors only when specific features are enabled:

1. Recipe Ratings (Standard)

  • Data Collected: Rating value (1-5 stars) and IP address.

  • Purpose: To prevent spam and duplicate ratings. This data is not used for any other purpose.

2. Recipe Analytics (Optional - Off by Default) If you enable the Recipe Analytics feature, we collect the following behavioral data to provide you with insights:

  • Device Information: IP address, browser type, and device type.

  • Usage Data: Which recipes are viewed, time spent on page (duration), and interactions with the recipe card (e.g., "Add to Cart" clicks, print button clicks).

  • Tracking Technologies: We may use cookies or local storage to associate these actions with a session.

3. How We Use Personal Information

We use the personal information we collect for the following business purposes:

  • Providing the Service: To operate the App, display recipe cards, and sync products.

  • Customer Support: To communicate with you (the merchant) and resolve technical issues.

  • Analytics: To provide you with reports on how your recipes are performing (if enabled).

  • Legal Compliance: To comply with applicable laws and regulations.

4. Sharing Personal Information

We do not sell your personal information or your customers' personal information to data brokers or third parties for marketing purposes.

However, we do share data with trusted Service Providers who help us operate the App. These providers are contractually obligated to protect your data and only use it to perform services for us:

  • Hosting & Infrastructure: Render.com – We use Render to host the App's database and application code.

  • Email Services: [e.g., Postmark or SendGrid] – to send you administrative emails (installations, errors). [Note: Remove or update this if you don't use an external email API]

  • Analytics Providers: [e.g., Google Analytics] – for our own internal tracking of how merchants use our App dashboard.

5. Data Retention

We retain your personal information only for as long as necessary to provide you with the Service.

  • Upon Uninstallation: If you uninstall the App, we retain your recipe data and store settings for 48 hours to allow for accidental uninstalls.

  • Permanent Deletion: After 48 hours, all store data, recipes, and personal information are permanently deleted from our databases. This action is irreversible.

6. Your Rights (GDPR - Europe)

If you or your customers are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), you have certain rights regarding your personal information, including the right to access, correct, or delete it.

  • For Merchants: Please contact us directly to exercise these rights.

  • For End-Customers: As we act as a Processor for end-customer data, we must process requests under the direction of the Merchant (the Controller). If your customer contacts us directly, we will forward the request to you.

International Transfers: Please note that your information may be transferred outside of Europe, including to Canada and the United States (where our servers are hosted). We rely on adequacy decisions or standard contractual clauses to ensure your data remains protected.

7. California Privacy Rights (CCPA/CPRA)

If you or your customers are residents of California, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) provides specific rights:

  • Right to Know: You may request a report of the categories of personal information we have collected about you in the last 12 months.

  • Right to Delete: You may request that we delete your personal information.

  • Right to Opt-Out: You have the right to opt-out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information. Recipe Kit does not sell personal information.

  • Non-Discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.

"Do Not Track" Signals: We do not currently alter our data collection and use practices when we see a Do Not Track signal from your browser.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time to reflect changes to our practices or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. Updates will be posted on this page with a revised "Last Updated" date.
